Overview

1. School Hours

The College of Nursing is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

2. Duration of Program:

  1. 4 Year Generic BScN: 04 years, (08 semesters, and semester duration 18 weeks, minimum teaching 16 weeks, exams 2 weeks)
  2. Post RN Midwifery: 01 year (2 semesters)
  3. Medical Technician: 01 year (each specific course)

3. Scholarship and Financial Assistance

Scholarship and Financial Assistance are available on a need cum merit basis. The Selection Committee entitles the student through a transparent screening process.

4. Uniform Code

a. Clinical Uniform Code:
  • White long sleeves Kameez, white Shalwar, white jacket with white dupatta (FOR FEMALES)
  • White paint and shirt with black shoes (FOR MALES)
  • Black shoes, Skin/ Flesh Colored socks.
  • Student Identity card
b. Class Uniform Code:
All students should put on professional dress, neat & clean lab coat (mandatory).

5. Attendance Policy

  1. School has a policy of 75% minimum attendance in theory and Clinical to complete the requirements of any selected course as per HEC policies.
  2. Classes are usually scheduled according to institutional policies as recommended by HEC.
  3. A passing grade of 50% is to be maintained by all the students. Assignments are to be completed within stipulated period of time. Students will be assessed clinically as well as theoretically on assignments and in examinations.
  4. Assigned study hours must be spent in the classroom or library and computer lab with respect to norms. Free period will be used for study or assignments in the classroom.
  5. Students are required to attend classes punctually; regular late comers will have to explain the reason in writing.
  6. If an emergency prevents a student’s attendance at class, she/he is responsible to notify the HFCON& AHS.
**Important Note: the entry test will be valid for the current session only**.

7. Absenteeism/Leave without Information:

  1. A student who cannot attend a theory or clinical class during the semester, due to an emergency, should notify the concerned faculty or year coordinator prior to the class and should submit a formal note upon his or her return.
  2. In exceptional circumstances, they may inform by 9:00 a.m. If student fails to inform before 9:00 a.m. then she/he needs to submit reason of absence in writing to the year/class coordinator.
  3. A student who is sick must be seen by a physician assigned for the students by the Institution. It is the student’s responsibility to submit the sick leave certificate to the year coordinator within 24 hours of resumption of classes. This certificate must be from the Holy Family Hospital appointed doctor; if in case of a certificate from elsewhere, it must be verified by our Hospital’s Doctor.

6. Holidays and Leave According to Criteria

In each academic year, students are allowed to take the following leaves:
a. Annual leave
  • as per schedule semester break of the institution.
b. Sick leave
  • up to 7 days/year. Leave exceeding seven days will need to be made up from the annual leave, after approval with the year/program coordinator.
c. Special leave
  • for a maximum of five days/year for a student’s own marriage may be granted upon a written request to the year/program coordinator and program director. It is the responsibility of the student to catch up with the missed contents. For completion of clinical hours student will contact the course and year coordinator.
d. Compassionate leave:
  • Up to three days may be granted only in the case of death of an immediate family member.
  • Up to one week compassionate leave will be provided to students, living out of the city of Karachi.
  • Students should request this leave in writing to the Year Coordinator.
  • It is the responsibility of the students to catch up with the missed contents of the classes in consultation with the respective course coordinators. For completion of clinical hours student will contact the course and year coordinator
e. Maternity leave
  • will be granted to students upon their written request. Student must discuss the maternity leave plan with their Year Coordinator at their earliest.
  • Maternity leave will be provided for up to 12 weeks. Since Maternity Leave is likely to affect successful completion of courses in the on-going semester, students availing this leave will resume classes in the next scheduled. This will mean that the duration of program will be extended.

8. Rules And Regulations For Clinical Practice

a. Safe Clinical Nursing Practice:
  • Students are required to exhibit principles of safe nursing care that promotes the actual or potential well-being of the patient.
b. Unsafe Clinical Nursing Practice:
  1. Any practice by the student which intentionally or unintentionally puts the patient or others at risk in the clinical area are considered as unsafe clinical practices.
  2. Any student, whose pattern of practice or behavior is found to be unsafe over a period of the semester/year, will be dealt under strict disciplinary action.
c. Clinical Evaluation Criteria:
  • In evaluating the students’ performance in the clinical area, a standardized tool will be used. This tool will assess student’s performance in the clinical setting based on areas described and reflecting safe clinical practice.
